Dash to Read is a new reading program in Southwest Michigan that serves children in local elementary schools, ranging from first to third grades. The purpose of the program is to create a non-threatening entity that will promote the reading and social skills of the child; by using a dog as an incentive for the child to read.

Results from similar programs have shown an increase in reading levels, word recognition, a higher desire to read, and an increase in practicing on their own to be prepared for when their canine classmates arrive. Reading to their canine friend gives them a non-judgemental environment where they will feel confident & successful!

Hannah Montgomery created the program to encourage confident reading in elementary students who may need additional incentives to read.

After School & Summer School Programs

Hannah and Dash will be working directly with the schools and/or local libraries coordinating a schedule for opportunities to read to Dash during school and summer. Please check the calendar for dates and times of reading sessions in your area as well as our up-coming events.

• You must have good behavior to earn a reading session with Dash.
  
• Reading will take place at the school or library.
  
• Hannah and Dash will read by appointment only.
  
• Hannah and Dash are not responsible for any problems due to allergies or injuries resulting from participation in the Dash to Read program.
  
• Days and times may vary.
  
• You must be respectful and kind to Dash, or you will be removed from the program.
  
• All services are completely free!

Program Rewards

When you read to Dash, you can earn rewards! When you start the program you will be given a punch card. Every time you read a book to Dash, you will get a punch in your card. When you reach a star, you have earned a reward!

• 5 Books - Special play time with Dash.
  
• 10 Books - Dash to Read Achievement Award presented by Dash!
  
• 15 Books- You will have a special Dash to Read book donated in your honor at your school library!
